Teacher Inquiry Groups
Teacher Inquiry Groups for Shakespeare & Social Justice
ABOUT TEACHER INQUIRY GROUPS
Approximately 20 teachers and teaching artists will meet online for 90-minute monthly synchronous meetings (and collaborate asynchronously for 2-3 hours each month) from January - May 2023. Through federal funding, there is a stipend of $450 available for participation.
Our goal is to write useful and innovative curriculum for high school teaching that combine:
Activities created by theater artists based on their work with youth programs at SCLA over the last almost thirty years, and insights that have come from those experiences with young people outside of school.
Shakespeare pedagogy developed for 21st Century learners in English Language Arts classes.
The Learning for Justice Standards from the Southern Poverty Law Center.
You can see what we’ve developed so far on our Resources page and Online Moduels.
2023 TEACHER INQUIRY GROUPS
The S&SJ Teacher Inquiry group will meet 90 minutes by Zoom monthly from January – May (dates/times may be further TBD by participants). During these meetings the group will:
Look at the year 1 development of “Sonnets for Social Justice” to see what educators across the country think about our approach
Learn more about the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Learning for Justice Standards
Discuss aspects of premodern scholarship on race and gender and other dimensions of diversity that could be important to your students
Discuss Shakespeare and social justice connections in classrooms – what is happening? How are students responding?
Share new ideas and materials from SCLA (or our national partners) for teaching Shakespeare
The DOE grant allows us to pay you a stipend of $450 for your participation in this spring seminar. There will be a $200 payment in January after the first meeting, and a $250 payment in May after the last meeting. You can choose to continue as a teacher leader and advisor to the project for the years that follow as we grow this network (continuing to receive a stipend for your time).
